Chronic bronchitis is a long-term inflammation of the bronchial tubes, which carry air to and from the lungs. This condition is characterized by a persistent cough that produces mucus, often lasting for at least three months in two consecutive years. It is commonly caused by smoking, air pollution, and exposure to irritants.
People with chronic bronchitis may experience symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest discomfort. The condition is part of a group of diseases known as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which also includes emphysema. Treatment often involves medications, lifestyle changes, and avoiding irritants to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
