Chowkidar
A "Chowkidar" is a Hindi term that translates to "watchman" or "guard" in English. Traditionally, a chowkidar is responsible for the security of a property or area, ensuring safety and monitoring for any suspicious activity. This role is common in both urban and rural settings in India and often involves patrolling and maintaining vigilance during the night.
In recent years, the term "Chowkidar" gained political significance in India during the 2019 general elections, where it was used by the ruling party to emphasize their commitment to security and governance. The phrase "Main Bhi Chowkidar" (I am also a watchman) became a popular slogan, symbolizing the idea of citizens taking responsibility for their country's safety and progress.
