Chicxulub impact
The Chicxulub impact refers to a massive asteroid collision that occurred about 66 million years ago in what is now the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. This event is widely believed to have caused the mass extinction of approximately 75% of Earth's species, including the dinosaurs. The impact created the Chicxulub crater, which is over 150 kilometers in diameter.
The asteroid that struck Earth was about 10 kilometers wide. The energy released by the impact was equivalent to billions of atomic bombs, leading to dramatic climate changes. This event marked the end of the Cretaceous period and the beginning of the Paleogene period, significantly altering the course of life on Earth.
