Chest Drainage
Chest drainage is a medical procedure used to remove air, fluid, or pus from the space around the lungs, known as the pleural cavity. This is often necessary in cases of conditions like pneumothorax (collapsed lung) or pleural effusion (fluid buildup). A tube, called a chest drain or chest tube, is inserted through the chest wall to facilitate this process.
The chest drain is connected to a collection system that allows for continuous monitoring of the fluid or air being removed. This procedure helps improve breathing and prevents complications, ensuring that the lungs can expand properly. Proper care and monitoring are essential during chest drainage to avoid infections or other issues.
