Charles Loring Brace
Charles Loring Brace (1826-1890) was an American social reformer known for his work in child welfare. He founded the Children's Aid Society in 1853, which aimed to provide support and care for homeless and neglected children in New York City. His innovative approach included placing children in foster homes, which was a significant shift from institutional care.
Brace was also an advocate for education and employment opportunities for youth. He believed that providing children with a stable environment and skills would help them become productive members of society. His efforts laid the groundwork for modern child welfare practices in the United States.
