Chacoan peccary
The Chacoan peccary, also known as the Chacoan peccary or Catagonus wagneri, is a medium-sized mammal native to the dry forests and scrublands of the Gran Chaco region in South America. It is characterized by its stout body, long snout, and coarse, bristly fur. This species is social and often found in small groups, primarily feeding on fruits, roots, and other vegetation.
Chacoan peccaries are unique among peccaries due to their distinct evolutionary lineage, which diverged from other peccary species millions of years ago. They are currently classified as vulnerable due to habitat loss and hunting pressures. Conservation efforts are underway to protect their remaining populations and habitats.
