Caucasian red deer
The Caucasian red deer, also known as Cervus elaphus maral, is a subspecies of red deer found primarily in the Caucasus Mountains region. These deer are characterized by their large size, with males typically weighing between 200 to 300 pounds. They have a reddish-brown coat that becomes darker in winter, and males grow impressive antlers that can reach up to 40 inches in length.
Caucasian red deer inhabit mixed forests and mountainous areas, where they graze on grasses, leaves, and shrubs. They are social animals, often forming herds, especially during the mating season. Conservation efforts are in place to protect their habitat and ensure their population remains stable in the wild.
