Catherine la Grande
Catherine la Grande, or Catherine the Great, was the Empress of Russia from 1762 until her death in 1796. Born in Germany in 1729, she married the future Emperor Peter III and became a key figure in Russian history. Catherine is known for her efforts to modernize Russia, expanding its territory and influence.
During her reign, Catherine implemented significant reforms in government, education, and culture. She was a patron of the arts and corresponded with prominent philosophers of the Enlightenment, such as Voltaire and Diderot. Her leadership helped transform Russia into one of the great powers of Europe.
