Castellania
Castellania is a historical term that refers to a fortified structure or castle, often associated with the medieval period. These buildings served as residences for nobility and military leaders, providing protection and a strategic advantage in warfare. Castellanias were typically located in areas of strategic importance, such as borders or trade routes.
In addition to their military function, castellania also played a role in governance. The castellan, or the person in charge of the castellania, was responsible for maintaining order, collecting taxes, and overseeing the local population. This made castellania an essential part of feudal society, blending military and administrative duties.
