Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone
The Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) was a self-declared protest area in Seattle, Washington, established in June 2020. It emerged during the protests against police brutality and systemic racism following the death of George Floyd. Activists occupied several city blocks, creating a space for community engagement, art, and discussions about social justice.
CHAZ was marked by a lack of police presence and aimed to promote a vision of a more equitable society. The area included makeshift barricades, community gardens, and various art installations. However, it faced challenges, including conflicts among residents and concerns about safety and governance.
