Capela dos Ossos
The Capela dos Ossos, or Chapel of Bones, is a small chapel located in the city of Évora, Portugal. Built in the 16th century, it is part of the larger Igreja de São Francisco. The chapel is famous for its interior walls, which are adorned with human bones and skulls, serving as a reminder of the inevitability of death.
The bones used in the chapel's decoration were taken from the nearby cemetery, where they were exhumed to make space for new burials. The chapel's design aims to provoke reflection on mortality and the transient nature of life, making it a unique and thought-provoking site for visitors.
