Canut Revolts
The Canut Revolts were a series of uprisings by silk workers in the city of Lyon, France, during the early 19th century. These revolts primarily occurred in 1831, 1834, and 1848, driven by poor working conditions, low wages, and the impact of industrialization on traditional craftsmanship. The workers, known as canuts, sought better labor rights and economic stability.
The revolts highlighted the struggles of the working class during the Industrial Revolution. The government responded with military force, leading to violent clashes. Although the revolts were ultimately suppressed, they played a significant role in raising awareness about workers' rights and influenced future labor movements in France.
