Calhoun College Controversy
The Calhoun College controversy arose at Yale University due to the name of the residential college, which was named after John C. Calhoun, a 19th-century politician and pro-slavery advocate. Critics argued that honoring Calhoun perpetuated racism and was inconsistent with the university's values of inclusivity and diversity.
In 2016, the debate intensified as students and faculty called for the college's name to be changed. In response, Yale announced in 2017 that it would rename the college, ultimately deciding on Grace Hopper College in honor of the computer scientist and Navy rear admiral, reflecting a commitment to a more inclusive legacy.
