CREST syndrome
CREST syndrome is a form of systemic sclerosis, a rare autoimmune disease that affects the skin and internal organs. The acronym CREST stands for Calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, Esophageal dysmotility, Sclerodactyly, and Telangiectasia. Each of these symptoms can vary in severity and may develop over time, impacting a person's quality of life.
Individuals with CREST syndrome often experience hardening and tightening of the skin, particularly on the fingers and face. Raynaud's phenomenon causes reduced blood flow to the fingers and toes in response to cold or stress. Other symptoms may include difficulty swallowing due to esophageal issues and small dilated blood vessels on the skin's surface.
