CMEs
Coronal Mass Ejections, or CMEs, are large expulsions of plasma and magnetic field from the Sun's corona. These events can release billions of tons of solar material into space at high speeds, often exceeding a million miles per hour. CMEs can occur during periods of increased solar activity, such as during solar flares.
When a CME reaches Earth, it can interact with the planet's magnetic field, potentially causing geomagnetic storms. These storms can disrupt satellite operations, affect power grids, and create beautiful auroras near the poles. Understanding CMEs is crucial for predicting their impact on technology and the environment.
