Butternut Tree
The Butternut Tree, also known as Juglans cinerea, is a deciduous tree native to North America. It typically grows between 30 to 60 feet tall and is recognized for its distinctive, elongated leaves and light gray bark. The tree produces edible nuts that are rich in oil and have a sweet, buttery flavor, hence the name.
Butternut trees thrive in well-drained soils and prefer sunny locations. They are often found in mixed forests and can be susceptible to diseases, particularly butternut canker, which has led to a decline in their population. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this valuable species.
