Homonym: Bufo Alvarius (Psychoactive)
Bufo alvarius, commonly known as the Colorado River toad, is a large toad species native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It is recognized for its distinctive appearance, featuring smooth, olive-green skin and prominent parotoid glands behind its eyes. These glands secrete a potent toxin called bufotenin, which can be harmful to predators.
The Colorado River toad primarily inhabits desert and semi-arid regions, often found near water sources. It is nocturnal, emerging at night to feed on insects and other small invertebrates. Due to habitat loss and other environmental pressures, Bufo alvarius populations are declining in some areas.
