Buckminsterfullerene
Buckminsterfullerene, also known as C60, is a spherical molecule made up of 60 carbon atoms. Its structure resembles a soccer ball, consisting of hexagons and pentagons arranged in a way that creates a hollow shape. This unique configuration is part of a larger family of molecules called fullerenes.
Discovered in 1985, Buckminsterfullerene is named after architect Buckminster Fuller, who popularized the geodesic dome design. It has interesting properties, including the ability to conduct electricity and act as an antioxidant. Researchers are exploring its potential applications in fields like materials science, medicine, and nanotechnology.
