Bovine Leukemia Virus
Bovine Leukemia Virus (BLV) is a retrovirus that primarily affects cattle, leading to a condition known as Bovine Leukemia. The virus is transmitted through direct contact, often via blood, and can also spread through contaminated equipment or during breeding. Infected animals may not show symptoms for years, but they can still spread the virus to others.
Once infected, some cattle may develop lymphosarcoma, a type of cancer affecting the lymphatic system. While there is no cure for BLV, management strategies include testing and culling infected animals to reduce the spread within herds. Vaccination and biosecurity measures can also help control the virus.
