The garden was created for the study of medicinal plants and has since expanded to include a diverse collection of over 6,000 plant species.
In 1997, the garden was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historical significance and contributions to botany. It features various sections, including a tropical greenhouse and a garden dedicated to ancient plants, showcasing the evolution of plant life over time.
