Boston and Maine Railroad
The Boston and Maine Railroad (B&M) was a major railroad in the northeastern United States, primarily serving the states of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. Founded in 1833, it played a crucial role in the development of the region's economy by facilitating the transportation of goods and passengers. The B&M operated an extensive network of rail lines, connecting various towns and cities.
In the mid-20th century, the B&M faced financial difficulties and competition from automobiles and trucks. It eventually merged with the New York Central Railroad in 1965, becoming part of the Penn Central Transportation Company. Today, remnants of the B&M's legacy can still be seen in the rail infrastructure and services in the region.
