Boron Neutron Capture Therapy
Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) is a targeted cancer treatment that combines the use of boron and neutrons. In this therapy, a patient is given a boron-containing compound that selectively accumulates in cancer cells. After sufficient time, the patient is exposed to a beam of neutrons, which interact with the boron to produce high-energy alpha particles and lithium nuclei. These particles then destroy the cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
BNCT is particularly promising for treating certain types of tumors, such as brain tumors and melanoma. Ongoing research aims to improve the effectiveness of boron compounds and neutron sources, making this therapy a potential option for patients who have limited treatment choices.
