Black architects
Black architects are professionals in the field of architecture who identify as Black or African American. They contribute to the design and planning of buildings and spaces, often bringing unique perspectives and cultural influences to their work. Historically, Black architects have faced significant barriers in the industry, but their contributions have been vital in shaping urban landscapes and communities.
Notable figures in this field include Paul Williams, the first Black architect in Los Angeles, and Norma Merrick Sklarek, the first Black woman to become a licensed architect in the United States. Today, organizations like NOMA (National Organization of Minority Architects) support and promote the work of Black architects, fostering diversity and inclusion in architecture.
