Black Stilt
The Black Stilt is a rare wading bird native to New Zealand, known for its striking black plumage and long, slender legs. It primarily inhabits riverbeds and wetlands, where it feeds on invertebrates and small fish. The species is critically endangered, with conservation efforts focused on habitat protection and breeding programs.
This bird, also called Kaki, has a unique breeding behavior, often nesting on the ground near water sources. The Black Stilt's population has been severely impacted by habitat loss and predation from introduced species, making its conservation a priority for wildlife organizations in New Zealand.
