Black Oystercatcher
The Black Oystercatcher is a large shorebird found along the Pacific coast of North America. It has a distinctive black body, bright orange bill, and yellow eye. This bird primarily feeds on intertidal invertebrates, such as clams and mussels, using its strong bill to pry them from rocks.
Black Oystercatchers are often seen in pairs or small groups, nesting on rocky shorelines. They are known for their loud, piping calls and are considered a species of concern due to habitat loss and environmental changes. Conservation efforts are in place to protect their breeding and feeding grounds.
