Birka
Birka is an ancient Viking trading settlement located on the island of Björkö in Sweden. Established in the 8th century, it served as a significant hub for commerce and cultural exchange in the Viking Age. The site is recognized for its well-preserved archaeological remains, including burial mounds, artifacts, and remnants of buildings, which provide insight into the daily life and trade practices of the Vikings.
In 1993, Birka was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historical importance and contribution to our understanding of Viking society. The settlement was strategically positioned along trade routes, facilitating connections between the Nordic countries and the rest of Europe.
