Biosafety Level 1
Biosafety Level 1 (BSL-1) is the lowest level of containment for working with biological agents. It involves handling well-characterized microorganisms that are not known to cause disease in healthy humans. Laboratories operating at this level typically have basic safety measures, such as handwashing facilities and proper waste disposal methods.
In a BSL-1 lab, researchers can safely conduct experiments with non-pathogenic strains of bacteria and other organisms. Standard practices include wearing lab coats and gloves, but specialized equipment or safety gear is not usually required. This level is suitable for teaching and basic research purposes.
