Bhakra Nangal Dam
The Bhakra Nangal Dam is a concrete gravity dam located on the Sutlej River in the northern Indian states of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. Completed in 1963, it is one of the highest dams in India, standing at 225.5 meters (740 feet). The dam plays a crucial role in irrigation, providing water to the agricultural lands in the region.
In addition to irrigation, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is also a significant source of hydroelectric power. It has an installed capacity of 1,325 megawatts, contributing to the energy needs of northern India. The dam creates the Bhakra Reservoir, which is vital for flood control and water supply.
