Beta-Amyloid
Beta-Amyloid is a protein fragment that is produced when amyloid precursor protein (APP) is broken down. In healthy brains, these fragments are typically cleared away, but in some individuals, they can accumulate and form sticky plaques. These plaques are often associated with Alzheimer's disease and can disrupt communication between brain cells.
The presence of beta-amyloid plaques is one of the key features used to diagnose Alzheimer's disease. Researchers are studying how these plaques contribute to the disease's progression and exploring potential treatments that target beta-amyloid to help prevent or reduce cognitive decline.
