Battle of the Nile
The Battle of the Nile took place on August 1, 1798, during the French Revolutionary Wars. It was a naval engagement between the British Royal Navy, led by Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, and the French fleet commanded by Vice Admiral François-Paul Brueys. The battle occurred near the mouth of the Nile River in Egypt and was significant for establishing British naval dominance.
The British fleet achieved a decisive victory, sinking or capturing many French ships. This defeat severely weakened the French campaign in Egypt, which was part of Napoleon Bonaparte's broader strategy to expand French influence. The battle is often regarded as one of Nelson's greatest triumphs.
