Battle of Wilderness
The Battle of Wilderness was fought from May 5 to May 7, 1864, during the American Civil War. It took place in the dense woods of Virginia between the Union forces, led by General Ulysses S. Grant, and the Confederate army, commanded by General Robert E. Lee. The battle was characterized by brutal close-quarters combat and heavy casualties on both sides.
Despite the fierce fighting, the battle ended inconclusively, with neither side achieving a decisive victory. However, it marked the beginning of Grant's Overland Campaign, as he continued to press southward toward Richmond, the Confederate capital, aiming to wear down Lee's forces.
