Battle of Westport
The Battle of Westport took place from October 21 to October 23, 1864, during the American Civil War. It was fought in and around Kansas City, Missouri, and was a significant engagement between Union forces led by Major General Samuel R. Curtis and Confederate troops commanded by Major General Sterling Price. The battle aimed to stop Price's raid into Missouri, which sought to gather supplies and recruit soldiers for the Confederate cause.
The Union victory at Westport effectively ended Price's campaign in Missouri, forcing his army to retreat. This battle is often referred to as the "Gettysburg of the West" due to its importance in the region. The outcome helped secure Union control over Missouri and contributed to the overall decline of Confederate military efforts in the western theater of the war.
