Battle of Surigao Strait
The Battle of Surigao Strait was a naval engagement that took place from October 24 to 25, 1944, during World War II. It was part of the larger Battle of Leyte Gulf, where the forces of the United States Navy faced off against the Imperial Japanese Navy. This battle marked the last time in history that battleships engaged in a full-scale naval battle.
The U.S. forces, equipped with advanced radar and superior tactics, successfully intercepted and defeated the Japanese fleet. The battle resulted in significant losses for Japan, including the sinking of several ships, such as the battleship Yamashiro. This victory helped secure American control over the Philippines.
