Battle of Gonzales
The Battle of Gonzales was the first military engagement of the Texas Revolution, occurring on October 2, 1835. The conflict arose when Texian settlers refused to return a small cannon to the Mexican government, which had been used to defend against Native American attacks. The Mexican authorities, led by General Domingo de Ugartechea, sent troops to retrieve the cannon, prompting the settlers to take a stand.
The Texians, rallying under the flag that read "Come and Take It," successfully defended the cannon against the Mexican forces. This battle marked a significant moment in the struggle for Texas independence, inspiring further resistance against Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna.
