Basswood
Basswood is a type of hardwood tree, scientifically known as Tilia americana, commonly found in North America. It is known for its light weight, fine grain, and pale color, making it a popular choice for woodworking and carving. The wood is easy to work with and takes paint and stain well, which is why it is often used in furniture and musical instruments.
The tree itself can grow quite tall, reaching heights of up to 100 feet. Basswood trees produce fragrant yellow flowers in the summer, which attract bees and other pollinators. The flowers are also used to make herbal teas, valued for their calming properties.
