Baiji
The Baiji, also known as the Yangtze River dolphin, is a freshwater dolphin species native to the Yangtze River in China. It is known for its long, slender body and a distinctive rounded forehead. The Baiji is critically endangered, primarily due to habitat loss, pollution, and boat traffic in its river habitat.
Efforts to conserve the Baiji have included habitat protection and research initiatives. Unfortunately, the last confirmed sighting of a Baiji in the wild was in 2002, leading many scientists to believe that the species may be functionally extinct. Conservationists continue to advocate for the protection of the Yangtze River ecosystem to support remaining wildlife.
