Aytollah
An "Aytollah" is a high-ranking title in the Shia branch of Islam, particularly in Iran. It signifies a religious leader who has extensive knowledge of Islamic law and theology. Aytollahs often serve as spiritual guides and have significant influence over their followers, providing interpretations of religious texts and leading community practices.
The title is derived from the Arabic phrase meaning "sign of God." Aytollahs can play important roles in both religious and political spheres, especially in countries where Islamic law is integrated into the legal system. The most prominent Aytollah in recent history is Aytollah Khomeini, who led the Iranian Revolution in 1979.
