Autosomal
"Autosomal" refers to the chromosomes that are not involved in determining the sex of an individual. Humans have 22 pairs of autosomes, which are numbered from 1 to 22, and one pair of sex chromosomes, which are either XX for females or XY for males. Autosomal chromosomes carry the majority of an individual's genetic information, influencing traits such as eye color, height, and susceptibility to certain diseases.
Genetic conditions can be classified as autosomal dominant or autosomal recessive. In autosomal dominant disorders, only one copy of the mutated gene from either parent can cause the condition. In contrast, autosomal recessive disorders require two copies of the mutated gene, one from each parent, for the individual to express the condition.
