autosomal recessive
Autosomal recessive is a type of genetic inheritance pattern where two copies of a mutated gene are required for an individual to express a specific trait or disorder. This means that both parents must carry at least one copy of the mutated gene, even if they do not show symptoms themselves. If both parents pass on the mutated gene, their child has a 25% chance of being affected.
Conditions caused by autosomal recessive inheritance include cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia. In these cases, individuals with one normal gene and one mutated gene are considered carriers and typically do not exhibit symptoms. However, they can pass the mutated gene to their offspring.
