Auerbach's Plexus
Auerbach's Plexus, also known as the myenteric plexus, is a network of nerve fibers located between the layers of the muscularis externa in the gastrointestinal tract. It plays a crucial role in regulating the motility of the intestines, coordinating the contractions of the smooth muscle to facilitate digestion and movement of food.
This plexus is part of the enteric nervous system, which is sometimes referred to as the "second brain" due to its ability to operate independently of the central nervous system. Auerbach's Plexus works alongside Meissner's Plexus, which primarily regulates secretions and blood flow in the gut.
