The team was named after the flames that engulfed the city during the Civil War. The Flames played their home games at the Omni Coliseum and had a loyal fan base during their time in Atlanta. In 1980, the Flames relocated to Calgary, Alberta, becoming the Calgary Flames. The move was due to financial difficulties and a lack of adequate facilities in Atlanta. The Flames' legacy continues in Calgary, where they have won the Stanley Cup in 1989.
