Astor Library
The Astor Library, established in 1854, was one of the first public libraries in the United States. Located in New York City, it was founded by wealthy philanthropist John Jacob Astor to provide free access to books and knowledge for the public. The library featured a vast collection of books and was known for its beautiful architecture.
In 1895, the Astor Library merged with the Lenox Library and the Tilden Trust to form the New York Public Library. The original building still stands today and is part of the library's historic collection, showcasing the importance of public libraries in promoting literacy and education.
