Asian lady beetle
The Asian lady beetle, scientifically known as Harmonia axyridis, is a small, oval-shaped insect that can vary in color from yellow to orange and even black. These beetles are often recognized by their distinctive spots, although some may be solid-colored. They are beneficial insects, primarily feeding on aphids and other pests, making them valuable for natural pest control in gardens and agricultural settings.
Originally from Asia, the Asian lady beetle was introduced to North America in the 1970s to help manage pest populations. However, they can become a nuisance when they invade homes in large numbers during the fall, seeking shelter for the winter. While they are generally harmless, their presence can be bothersome, and they may emit a foul odor when disturbed.
