Argentine Military Junta
The Argentine Military Junta refers to a series of military governments that ruled Argentina from 1976 to 1983. This period, known as the Dirty War, was marked by widespread human rights abuses, including forced disappearances, torture, and killings of suspected political opponents. The junta justified its actions as necessary to combat leftist terrorism.
The junta came to power through a coup d'état that overthrew the democratically elected government of President Isabel Perón. It was characterized by a lack of political freedom and severe repression. The military regime ended in 1983, leading to the restoration of democracy and subsequent trials for those responsible for human rights violations.
