Arctodus simus
Arctodus simus, commonly known as the giant short-faced bear, was a large bear species that lived in North America during the Pleistocene epoch. It is estimated to have weighed between 1,500 to 2,500 pounds and stood about 10 feet tall when on its hind legs. This bear was known for its long legs and slender body, which made it an efficient runner.
The giant short-faced bear primarily inhabited open grasslands and forests. It is believed to have been a scavenger and predator, feeding on large herbivores like Mammuthus (mammoths) and Bison antiquus (ancient bison). Arctodus simus went extinct around 11,000 years ago, likely due to climate change and competition with other predators.
