Arbutus menziesii
Arbutus menziesii, commonly known as the Pacific madrone, is a tree native to the western coastal regions of North America. It typically grows in dry, rocky soils and can reach heights of 15 to 30 feet. The tree is characterized by its smooth, reddish-brown bark that peels away in thin layers, revealing a lighter inner bark.
The leaves of Arbutus menziesii are evergreen, leathery, and dark green, providing year-round foliage. In spring, the tree produces clusters of small, white to pink flowers, which develop into round, red berries by late summer. These berries are edible and attract various wildlife, including birds.
