Apalone spinifera
The Apalone spinifera, commonly known as the spiny softshell turtle, is a freshwater turtle native to North America. It is characterized by its flattened, soft shell covered in small spines, which gives it a unique appearance. These turtles are typically found in rivers, lakes, and ponds, where they prefer sandy or muddy bottoms.
Spiny softshell turtles are known for their excellent swimming abilities and can often be seen basking on riverbanks or floating just below the water's surface. They primarily feed on aquatic invertebrates, fish, and plant matter, playing an important role in their ecosystem by helping to maintain the balance of aquatic life.
