Softshell Turtles
Softshell turtles are a unique group of turtles known for their distinctive, flexible shells made of a leathery material instead of the hard, bony shells found in most turtles. They belong to the family Trionychidae and are primarily found in freshwater habitats like rivers, lakes, and ponds. Softshell turtles are excellent swimmers and can often be seen basking on riverbanks or submerged in shallow waters.
These turtles have long necks and can extend them to breathe air while mostly submerged. They are carnivorous, feeding on a diet that includes fish, insects, and crustaceans. Some species, such as the Florida softshell turtle, are known for their large size and can grow up to 30 inches in length.
