Anne Lister
Anne Lister (1791-1840) was an English landowner and diarist, often referred to as the "first modern lesbian." She is best known for her extensive diaries, which detail her life, relationships, and thoughts, written in a code that combined Greek and algebra. Lister managed her family's estate, Shibden Hall, in West Yorkshire, and was known for her strong personality and independence.
Her diaries provide valuable insights into early 19th-century life, particularly regarding women's roles and same-sex relationships. Lister's life and writings have gained renewed interest, inspiring works such as the HBO series Gentleman Jack, which dramatizes her experiences and relationships.
