Andersonville
Andersonville was a Confederate prison camp during the American Civil War, located in Georgia. Officially known as Camp Sumter, it operated from February 1864 to April 1865. The camp was designed to hold about 10,000 prisoners but often housed over 30,000, leading to overcrowding and unsanitary conditions.
The camp became notorious for its high mortality rate, with approximately 13,000 of the 45,000 Union soldiers who were imprisoned there dying from disease, malnutrition, and exposure. Today, the site is preserved as the Andersonville National Historic Site, which includes a cemetery and a museum dedicated to the memory of those who suffered there.
